Facilities Manager – Stratford School Academy, Newham, London, £51,172 pa.
We want to talk to you if you are interested in working with us as our Facilities Manager. As Facilities Manager you will have overall management responsibility of the Academy’s estates and buildings, be responsible for making sure that the Academy’s IT, reprographics, cleaning and catering services are delivered to a high standard and will line manage the Academy’s teams of site staff, midday-staff and Science, Art & Design and Cooking technicians.
It’s a senior post and one where you need to be prepared to work the hours the job requires. And it is a job that matters: we have two buildings both built within the last 5 years and what we have discovered is that clean, tidy and well maintained buildings make a huge difference to how well teachers and pupils do and feel: give everyone a good quality built environment and they will respond.
We are what is known as a converter or standalone Academy: we stand on our own two feet, we are not part of a chain or under the wings of a Local Authority. Which makes the job interesting: from making sure the site team keep the playground litter free, to negotiating and letting contracts, to having delegated responsibility for Health and Safety, it’s all down to the Facilities Manager – no procurement department or TFM company to hold your hand.
Of course from time to time, teenagers being teenagers, they will damage toilet doors, put graffiti on walls and stick chewing gum under desks and teachers, from time to time, will at short notice, ask for large quantities of photocopying to be done. If these kind of things will drive you nuts then it’s not the job for you, but if you can cheerfully sort these things out knowing that by doing so you are making a contribution to the education of the next generation then you might well find our job rewarding.
We try to look after our staff. We provide travel loans and have cycle to work, parking permit and childcare voucher schemes. All staff get priority admission to the school for their children. Our school dinners are well worth eating and you get free tea or coffee all day made by a qualified barista. Last but not least, you get to work with very nice people and pupils.
